Palma-Seaside football

Friday's game
Palma (4-1) at Seaside (0-5), 7:30 p.m.
Assuming the new sod has finally taken hold, the Spartans will host their first game on campus. And it couldn't be coming at a better time.
Seaside needs a shot in the arm, having been outscored 81-25 in two Gabilan Division games. Last week it played a solid first half before wearing down in a loss to undefeated Aptos.
Just three Monterey County teams have beaten Palma in the last 30 years, with Seaside posting a 25-15 win in 2012.
The Chieftains are coming off a 58-point uprising over Gilroy, with Grant Sergent throwing three touchdown passes in the first half.
Even more impressive is Sergent has not thrown an interception in his last 242 attempts dating back to last year.
Anthony Villegas will likely get more than nine carries this week for Palma. The junior has gone over 100 yards rushing in 13 of his 16 career starts.
Mateo Martinez, who shares the team lead with two interceptions, returned a kickoff  93 yards for a touchdown last week.
With the Spartans offensive line getting a couple of bodies back, the hope is that it can establish the run and keep Palma's high-potent offense off the field.
