Palma football

It took one loss -- the Chieftains only setback all season -- for head coach Jeff Carnazzo to reshuffle his offensive philosophies.
It wasn't overhaul. You don't change what has worked for 18 plus seasons. Yet, it became clear that 11 sets of eyes by the opposing defense were honing in on one player.
Whether the last four games have been a true test or not, the Chieftains have clearly become different offensively in how they're producing points.
Meaning eight different players not named Anthony Villegas have scored touchdowns in the last four games.
"We had to spread the field," Carnazzo said.
Villegas is still the centerpiece to this offense. If Palma has aspirations of making an extended run in the postseason, he'll get his share of touches.
It's not a coincidence that Palma is 13-3 when the junior running back rushes for over 100 yards the last two years.
Yet, seeing Grant Sergent evolve behind center in throwing for 15 touchdowns this year, you have to respect Palma's passing game.
Sergent is approaching 300 attempts without an interception. He's been sharp in his reads, hitting his receivers in stride.
But these last four games have been like pop quizzes. It's mid-term time next week when Palma goes to 8-0 Aptos, a team that has surrendered just 47 points in five league games.
Neither one of these powers have had a meaningful game in the last four weeks. The feeling is those 11 sets of eyes will remain on Villegas -- perhaps peaking at Sergent.
