Gonzales (8-0) at Stevenson (3-4), 2 p.m.
Playing the role of spoiler isn't all the Pirates are grasping for. Upsetting Gonzales would put them in a tie for first in the Santa Lucia Division.
History shows that the Spartans have not played particularly well on Saturday's, having gone 2-10 in the last eight years. One of those wins, however, was a 9-7 decision over Stevenson three years ago.
Gonzales has a lot of ammunition to stop, starting with tailback Payton Flores, who broke the single season school record for rushing yards last week.
The senior needs 357 yards in his last two regular season games to reach 2,000. Last week he piled up 293 yards on just nine carries, scoring touchdowns on three of his first four carries.
Raul Morales has thrown 12 touchdown passes and rushed for six this fall while Dominic Emery has 25 catches for 435 yards and four touchdowns.
Flores has been a thief on defense as well for Gonzales with four interceptions while Nael Vasquez and Pablo Villasenor have combined for 10 sacks and 138 tackles.
Still stinging from a 12-6 overtime loss to Soquel, the Pirates have had an extra week to prepare for the Spartans.
Stevenson has been involved in two games decided by a point and one that reached overtime, going 1-2 in those battles.
Alex Murray has rushed for 508 yards and four touchdowns for the Pirates, and leads the team in receiving yards with 278 on 15 catches.
Dylan Santos has thrown for nearly 1,000 yards for Stevenson, with Ryan Douglas having caught 16 passes. Douglas, Murray and Connor Adams anchor a defense that is allowing 14.8 points in league.
