Friday's game
Seaside (0-1) at Bishop O'Dowd (1-1), 7 p.m.
It's one thing to deal with the mental part of a rivalry game the following week. It's another to have to bounce back from a last second loss to your rivals.
Seaside has no choice as it faces a Bishop O'Dowd squad that fell in the North Coast Section finals last year to Marin Catholic.
The Dragons took their lumps last week in a 58-16 loss to Del La Salle. Last season they responded from a beating from the national powers by rattling off six straight wins.
One of the more electrifying players in the NCS suits up for Bishop O'Dowd in Austin Jones, who rushed for over 1,500 yards last year, accounting for 27 touchdowns.
Two costly turnovers in the second half and no kicker last week cost the Spartans, who fell 29-26 to Monterey on a field goal with no time left on the clock.
How Seaside responds this week with its effort could dictate its season. Elijah Robinson ran well for Seaside last week while quarterback Tristan Cortez had his moments.
And Seaside should have its kicker back this week.
Depth will continue to be an issue for Seaside, who is down two lineman that start both ways for at least another week.
