Friday's game
Palma (3-1) at Gilroy (1-3), 7:30 p.m.
Last year's 13-0 record and Central Coast Section Division V title seems so long ago for Gilroy, who has been outscored 147-28 this fall.
An offense that produced 512 points last season has been blanked twice this year, as Brendan Doyle has accounted for all four of the Mustangs touchdowns this year, all on the ground.
Still stinging from an emotional loss to rival Salinas, the Chieftains failed to score in the second half last week.
For just the second time in nine games, Palma didn't win a game in which Anthony Villegas rushed for over 100 yards.
It was uncharacteristic to see a Palma defense give up 542 yards in offense. By comparison, it gave up 526 combined yards in shutting down Sacred Heart Cathedral and Menlo-Atherton.
Villegas is going to get his yards. But the Chieftains have to do a better job of protecting quarterback Grant Sergent, who was often running for his life last week, completing just 11-of-25.
Through four games, Palma's offense has not turned the ball over while the defense has forced 11 turnovers this year.
Gilroy won't be the test the Chieftains need to clean up their deficiencies. Yet, it might be the perfect game coming after a draining loss.
