Perhaps it's the new look helmets that Pacific Grove is sporting this season. Or the return of former coach Buck Roggeman as a defensive assistant coach.
Because not since the Roggeman era in 2004 have the Breakers produced two shutouts in a single season.
While I wouldn't put Pacific Grove in the conversation as a title contender in the Cypress Division, it is on the right path to getting back to a place that it has become accustomed to.
Last year's 1-9 season wasn't a fluke. Dwindling numbers and injuries saw the program managed just 54 points all season.
In three games this fall, Pacific Grove (2-1) has already scored 72 points. The roster is nearly double (34 players) to what it closed last season with.
And the confidence has returned. Anthony DaSilva is a promising runner that has scored at least one touchdown in each of the teams first three games.
Big plays have become a part of the Breakers arsenal as evident in Friday's 26-0 win over Stevenson when Blake Moore opened the game with a 42 yard touchdown run.
Chianti Carter added a 39 yard touchdown. Two weeks earlier DaSilva darted 39 yards for a score, while John Kerick caught a 55-yard touchdown pass from Freddy Albert.
Still the defense will be the cornerstone to the Breakers resurgence. It's a cast of unknown characters chasing respect.
