Saturday's game
Hartnell (2-0) vs. Redwoods (1-1) at Humboldt State, 1 p.m.
Battle tested could describe the Panthers, who scored in the final minute two weeks ago to beat Yuba in their opener, then used a 33-yard field goal by Juan Herrera last week to defeat Foothill.
Hartnell has responded in big moments. Remember this is a program that lost two games in the final minute last year.
Jeff Weimer has had an auspicious start to his collegiate career for the Panthers with a game-winning touchdown catch, and a reception late in the game to set up Herrera's field goal.
The 6-foot-3 Salinas graduate has 20 catches for 242 yards and two touchdowns this year. Teammate Devan Owens has 16 catches for 150 yards.
Quarterback Isaiah Ariolla-Randall had thrown for 578 yards for the Panthers, with Seaside product Keishawn Robinson having rushed for 101 yards and a touchdown.
Hartnell has got to clean up its mistakes, having turned the ball over eight times this year. A concern also has to be the ground game, which is averaging 1.3 yards each time it touches the ball.
Redwoods is ranked No. 11 in the state in scoring, averaging 39 points a game after a 44-28 win at Gavilan.
Brody Lucero has thrown for 748 yards and eight touchdowns for Redwoods -- five of those scoring tosses coming in a 41-34 loss to MPC. Elijah Hicks has rushed for 203 yards this fall.
Defensively, DeMarcus Hawkins has a team high 14 tackles, two sacks and two fumble recoveries for Hartnell, returning one 55 yards for a touchdown.
Alisal grad Alexis Ramos has 13 tackles and two sacks. When are opponents going to stop throwing in the direction of Jakari Jenkins, who has three picks in two games?
The two teams have met twice in the last 10 years, with Hartnell posting a 48-7 in 2015.
