Gonzales football

You always wonder how a team will respond under adversity, particularly when it's unsure what its identity is.
As much talk about changing the culture of a program is preached, how your players respond under pressure paints a better picture.
We got a glimpse of Gonzales' potential last year when it closed the season by winning three of its final four games.
Yet, we hadn't seen how the Spartans would react when trailing in the second half -- until Friday in their 36-23 win at Pacific Grove.
Not only was the reminder of a 15-year losing streak to Pacific Grove hanging over their heads, but the Spartans were forced to play most of the game with a backup quarterback.
Oh, the game plan changed. The passing game was simplified. But Gonzales adapted and scored the games last 20 points to get on the bus 2-0.
No doubt, it doesn't hurt having a player like Payton Flores, who put the Spartans on his shoulders, having a hand in all three touchdowns in the second half.
Flores ran with passion behind his offensive line. His effort got contagious. The team was composed in its comeback.
Perhaps the biggest compliment the coaching staff put on its players was trust. Recovering an onside kick after taking its first lead of the game in the fourth quarter crippled Pacific Grove.
A risk? Absolutely. But head coach Art Berlanga believed his defense would come up with a stop if needed. He was right on the ensuing drive when Gonzales created a turnover.
Beating Pacific Grove had extra incentive. The last time it occurred is the last time the Spartans won a league title -- 15 years ago.
