Friday's game
Soledad (0-0) vs. Palma (0-0) at Rabobank, 7:30 p.m.
One thing about the Aztecs is they have not shied away from playing some elite programs over the last three years in Salinas, Seaside, Antioch and now Palma in non-league play
And while Soledad has taken its lumps in the preseason, the end results produced a league title last fall and a Central Coast Section Division IV crown in 2016.
For the first time since the Gabilan Division was formed, the Chieftains aren't coming into the season as the defending champions.
The core of the offense is intact as sophomore school rushing record holder Anthony Villegas and his nearly 1,700 rushing yards are back for Palma, as well as quarterback Grant Sergent.
The Chieftains closed last fall with a rush, rattling off four straight wins before falling to Terra Nova in the Open Division III semifinals.
Soledad has the task of replacing its all-time leading rusher, as well as a quarterback that set a single season school record for touchdown passes.
Angel Olivas and his 40 catches and nearly 900 receiving yards is back, while Chris Johnson showed flashes last year at tailback in limited duty.
The two teams have faced each other only one other time, that coming in the 2011 postseason, with Palma prevailing 35-0.
