CIF State Meet track and field pole vault champion Laurel Wong wanted one more crack at a personal record.
The Santa Catalina junior officially closed her season last weekend by setting a personal best in the pole vault, capturing the Golden West Invitational in Sacramento with a mark of 13-feet-4.
Wong, who became the first Monterey County state track and field champion since Sani Roseby won the 100 for Monterey in 2000, set a personal best by one inch, re-writing her own school and county record.
Despite vaulting into a heavy head-wind, she had three near misses at 13-7.
Monterey sophomore Azjani McGill took second in the 100, clocking 11.24 into a 2.1 mph head wind. He also finished second in the triple jump with a mark of 42-10 1/4.
Teammate William Caliz was third in the 100 (11.33) and fifth in the 200 (22.92).
