Pacific Grove-Carmel baseball

Battling for second place normally isn't the objective when these two long-time baseball powers face each other.
And while the Mission Trail Athletic League title is still within view, the importance of positioning for the playoffs is significant for both the Breakers and host Carmel.
Right now both teams are locked in a tie for second with King City with six games left. Just the first three teams from the MTAL are assured of an automatic playoff spot.
Of course, that probably doesn't mean much since five teams went to the postseason last year from the MTAL. Then again just three advanced three years ago.
Plus Pacific Grove is just 1-7 outside league play while the Padres are 3-6 in non-league play.
The Breakers have rattled off six consecutive league wins since dropping a pair to King City, while Carmel has won two straight after enduring a three-game league losing streak.
Christian Stapleton has been possessed at the plate with seven homers this spring for the Padres, with more than half of his hits this season going for extra bases.
The senior has also driven in 26 runs this year for Carmel, while Kevin Cook and Jabin Trosky have begun to swing hot bats.
Hunter Hanes and sophomore Daniel Rosas continue to be productive at the plate for Pacific Grove, having driven in a combined 34 runs.
Hanes or Dylan Graham will likely get the start today for the Breakers, with Dylan Houpt throwing for Carmel.
