Breaking down the track and field finals
Pacific Division
Monterey will go into Friday's meet at Gilroy High the favorites in both the boys and girls division. The school has never won titles in both divisions in the same season.
The Toreadores strength in the girls division starts with Jhailyn Bryant, who is among the favorites in the 200 and 400.
Bryant, who will play volleyball this fall at CSU-Monterey Bay, is undefeated in league competition in the 400.
Teammate Alex Guerrero has produced points all season in the 100 and long jump. Both will also run on the teams top ranked 400 relay team.
Assuming Tuesday's trials at Watsonville have no surprises or setbacks, Pacific Division boys cross country champion Isaac Gensel will look to duplicate the feat for Monterey in the 1,600 and 3,200.
Teammate William Caliz has evolved into one of the top sprinters in the Pacific Division, as he will get reacquainted with Seaside's DeAntae Williams in the 100 and 200.
The Toreadores got a boast with the return of Azjani McGill, who has recovered from an injury that had shut him down for three weeks, winning the 200 in the teams last dual meet.
McGill will join a talented field in the 100 and 200, and will look to duplicate his feat as defending long jump champion. Last year as a freshman, he reached the CCS finals in the long jump.
