With San Benito officially running its last track meet on its 60-plus year old slow gray dirt track last Wednesday, just two teams in the tri-region area will have dirt tracks in 2019.
The Balers entire facility is getting a face lift, meaning next season the program will have a state-of-the-art all-weather track to go along with a program that challenges for supremacy each year.
That leaves Gonzales and Seaside - both nicknamed Spartans ironically -- as the only schools in the area that have a facility with dirt tracks.
While there has been talk down in south county of Gonzales getting an upgrade, little discussion has occurred at Seaside.
The numbers are up at Gonzales this season. There's interest again in the program. Imagine a bright orange all-weather track with black lanes to lure other athletes out for the sport.
Seaside may have the worst facility in the county in terms of its track and football/soccer field. There are gopher holes on the field. The dirt track is more like gravel in spots.
Monterey found a way to a decade ago to remake its facilities. Why can't Seaside?
Sports programs at Gonzales are on the mend. The pride is coming back. Don't leave track out.
