Names to watch in track and field

The state meet has become an expectation for Laurel Wong, who has made two consecutive trips in her first two years at Santa Catalina in the pole vault.
At the mid-point of the track and field season, Wong has the state lead in the event, having sailed a career best 13-feet-3 back in February. She was fifth in the state finals last year.
While the pole vault is her focus, the junior is a threat in a number of events in the Cougars quest for a sixth straight Mission Trail Athletic League team title.
Wong has jumped a career best 17-9 1/2 in the long jump, vaulting her to No. 3 in the Central Coast Section. She's also among the league's top 100 meter sprinters.
Soledad foreign exchange student Noora Hautamaki is currently ranked fourth in the CCS in the long jump (17-9) and triple jump (36-8) -- both school records, and fifth in the shot put (35-7).
Alvarez pole vaulter Vicentejordan Vanderlipe has catapulted his name among the top vaulters in the CCS after recently clearing 14-feet -- currently tied for third in the CCS.
