The future holds a lot of promise for the Falcons as head coach Josh Leigh brought up a contingent of sophomores this year. He didn't bring them up to sit and learn.
So is the future now?
"This will be a very strong group for the next few years,'' Leigh said.
The belief is changing the fortunes of the program starts now for the Falcons, who were competitive last year in the Coastal Athletic League.
"We are very young,'' Leigh said. "But it's very exciting for us. We had a very successful JV season last year.''
While growing pains are expected as the foundation for the future is laid down, Leigh will lean on a pair of junior holdovers to provide leadership in forward Jerry Wu and guard Sam Wisn.
A talented sophomore class includes Albert Matei and Edwin Gao while junior Kevin Kang provides defensive awareness and exceptional speed in transition.
"This group moves the ball well,'' Leigh said. "And all of them are willing to put in the hard work to become a defensive minded team.''
Leigh believes defense leads to wins. In its four wins last year, York held opponents to an average of 35.8 points a game.
But in five league losses, the number nearly doubled to 71 points a game. Then again, four of those losses came from two teams no longer in the CAL.
York also had four non-league games to gear up for league play last year. It went into the holidays having yet to face anyone but themselves in scrimmages.
Still Leigh believes it's in a more competitive atmosphere in the CAL. The decision to bring up a handful of sophomores is because the expectation is it can compete now.York's last winning season was in 2012 when it won eight league games. Over the last five years, it has won 10 league games total.
