If anyone is going to be a threat to the Vikings reign in the Gabilan Division, it will be Seaside, who was impressive in the preseason.
The two teams open the league season tonight at North Salinas, who has not lost a league game since the Gabilan Division was formed five years ago -- a streak that has stretched for 30 games.
In fact the Vikings are 57-3 in the Gabilan Division during their run of five consecutive league titles, coming into this season with a 23 game league winning streak.
Coming off a Pacific Division crown last fall, the Spartans are lead by arguably the best player in the county in junior guard Jordan Olivares.
Olivares has led the team in scoring in each of her first two years for the Spartans, who were 8-3 in the preseason.
While Olivares can take over games, so can teammate Daja Mitchell, who has been a double-double machine this year, having transferred from Monterey.
North Salinas' beefed up preseason finished at 7-5. But the experience was invaluable, especially for freshmen Natalie Morales and Nevaeh Black, who lead the team in scoring.
Maxine Tennant and Destiney Urzua provide experience for the Vikings along with senior Jozzette Reyes.
North Salinas has won the last 12 meetings between the two teams.
