The last time the Vikings dropped a Gabilan Division opener, they actually started the year 0-2.
What transpired over the next five years was a 58-1 record and five league titles.
My point is hold off on those eulogies. It was just one game.
Granted it came at home, where North Salinas had never suffered a Gabilan Division loss. And it came against a talented Seaside squad that's a legitimate title contender.
But so are the Vikings, who are a team that starts two freshman. Those jitters will be gone the next time it meets Seaside.
Of concern now is righting the ship against an underrated Gilroy squad, who won 17 games last year and opened league play with an impressive win over Monte Vista.
While Natalie Morales and Nevaeh Black continue to grow into their roles in their first season with North Salinas, senior Jozzette Reyes showed the way with 18 points in the teams opener.
Defense will dictate the tempo. Gilroy is 6-0 when it scores 60 or more points this year, 2-4 when it doesn't. North Salinas has given up 60 or more points once in 13 games this winter.
Maggie Brinkman is coming off a 21-point effort for Gilroy.
