In case you missed it, this was the final year for the Mission Trail Athletic League and Monterey Bay League for football -- and for all sports when the school year ends in June.
Next fall the two leagues will become the Pacific Coast Athletic League, and will be divided into four divisions for football - one 'A' league, two 'B' leagues and one 'C' league.
The 'A' league, which will remain the Gabilan Division, will consist of Aptos, Alvarez, San Benito, Palma, Seaside and reigning champion Salinas, with Christopher and Gilroy moving in.
Based on the fact that both the Cougars and Mustangs won Central Coast Section titles and appear on solid footing, this move made sense.
The Mission Division will consist of teams from three different divisions last fall as Alisal, Carmel, Monte Vista, North Salinas, Scotts Valley, Soledad and Watsonville will become one.
This division looks extremely competitive. Three of those teams went to the playoffs last year, while three others were one win away from being in the postseason.
The Cypress Division includes teams from three different divisions as well as King City, Monterey, North County, Pacific Grove, San Lorenzo Valley, Santa Cruz and St. Francis become one.
The Sharks and Santa Cruz, who shared the MTAL's Coastal Division last fall, are moving up from a 'C' division to a 'B' division.
The Santa Lucia division includes Gonzales, Greenfield, Harbor, Marina, Pajaro Valley, Soquel and Stevenson. Marina set a school record for wins last fall.
Overall, it looks like the committee got this right. My only concern for a program in the 'A' league is all programs should have three levels of football. At least one program didn't last year.
And for you traditionalists, don't panic. Carmel and Pacific Grove will meet next fall, as will Seaside and Monterey and Gonzales and King City. Rivalry games are a must.
