State Northern California Division III Tournament
Wednesday's match
No. 16 Woodland (17-5) at No. 1 Santa Catalina (25-0), 7 p.m.
Apparently enrollment isn't the sole criteria for what division you'll end up in for the state volleyball tournament.
While the Cougars ran off with their second straight Central Coast Section Division V title, they will be in Division III tonight for the state tournament.
Why?
I'm not sure. I'm guessing being 25-0 has something to do with it. Or the fact that Santa Catalina has swept 23 of 25 opponents this year and is 52-1 over the last two years.
Of course, that one setback came in the State Northern California Division V finals match, where a win would have put the Cougars in the state championship.
While the road to a state title got a little harder being shoved two divisions higher, Santa Catalina did get the No. 1 seed -- meaning it's home for as long as it's alive in the tournament.
Woodland fell in the SAC Joaquin Section Division III finals to El Dorado. Prior to that, it has won 11 straight matches.
The Wolves are similar in size to Santa Catalina with 5-foot-11 setter Lyneah Wax and three players 5-9 or taller at the net.
Co-Mission Trail Athletic League Most Valuable Player McKinley Fox ignites an attack for Santa Catalina that includes Maria Santos, Saige Madden and Alicia Rector.
The 6-foot- setter has compiled over 1,500 sets in her career, many starting with a pass from four-year starting libero Olivia Satow.
This is Santa Catalina's third straight trip to the State Northern California Tournament. Dating back to 2015, it has won 31 straight home matches
