Marina football

That 13 plus quarter scoreless drought four weeks ago seems like a distance memory today for the Mariners.
 Or does it?
Lost in Marina's single season school record for wins and points is that scoreless streak is probably going to cost them a share of the Coastal Division title and a potential playoff spot.
Marina coach Vernon Calhoun can't let that go -- even after the greatest four week stretch in school history.
"I will always have the thought of what could have been,'' Calhoun said.
Of course, Calhoun can also look forward to what the future could have in store for the program.
There's a buzz on campus about football, something that Calhoun has never seen at Marina. A school record four straight wins will get a student bodies attention.
Yet, it was how Marina won -- in such decisive manner that has created expectations beyond this fall and interest in a program that cut its junior varsity team because of a lack of interest.
Marina put up points at a record setting pace, averaging 51.5 points during its four-game run. Three of the schools all-time single-game scoring records came in the last four games.
Twice the Mariners put up 60 points in a run-dominated offense and knocked Santa Cruz from the unbeaten ranks -- a program that could be headed for a share of the Coastal Division title.
"I don't have an answer,'' Calhoun said. "For three weeks, we looked lost running a no-huddle attack and then it just clicked.''
In four games, Marina produced 213 points. That's more points than it had produced all season in six of its previous seven years.
