Drive for toys by North Salinas girls hoops

The annual North Salinas Sportsmanship girls basketball classic will have a different twist this year when the tournament takes place Dec. 15-17.
A toy drive has begun to provide boys and girls ages 5-10 toys for Christmas. All eight teams taking part in the tournament are bringing gifts for kids.
"There are over 1,300 kids that are homeless and will not receive a Christmas gift in Salinas,'' North Salinas coach Darren Jackson said. "We want to change that. We want to make a difference.''
Schools taking part in the tournament include Alvarez, defending champion Aptos, King City, North Salinas, Notre Dame, Seaside, Scotts Valley and Soledad.
All eight teams will bring at least 10 toy gifts to the game. Jackson is hoping to double the projected 100 gifts expected that weekend.
"If we can get people more fortunate to buy a toy, and would be incredible,'' Jackson said. "It doesn't have to be expensive. Just new. No kid should go without a Christmas gift.''
Anyone interested in bringing a toy gift to the event can contact Jackson at 831-809-0333.
