Two annual boys basketball tournaments will highlight this weekend with the Eagles Classic at Alvarez and the Jose Solis-Vantory Miles Alisal Memorial.
Alvarez coach Mark Haddan has brought in mostly schools from outside the Central Coast Section, and even the state, giving his team a chance to play unfamiliar opponents.
Thursday's first round games for the Eagles Classic be Castlemont vs. Immanuel at 3:30 p.m., Kennedy of Richmond vs. North Salinas at 5 p.m., McQueen of Reno vs. Fountain Valley at 6:30 p.m. and Christ the King vs. Alvarez at 8 p.m.
Last year Alvarez finished third in its tournament, while North Salinas was a consolation winner.
The reigning Pacific Division champion Trojans, who have moved to the Gabilan Division this year, have a lineup comprised of teams from Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties.
Kicking off the Alisal tournament will be Gonzales vs. Seaside at 3:30 p.m., Pajaro Valley vs. Scotts Valley at 5 p.m., Christopher vs. San Benito at 7:30 p.m., and Watsonville vs. Alisal at 8 p.m.
Last year the Trojans fell in the title game to Sequoia.
The annual Gilroy girls basketball classic will feature Stevenson, Santa Catalina and Notre Dame in the eight-team tournament.
