King City-Carmel football

Saturday's game
King City (5-3) at Carmel (4-4), 2 p.m.
No one figured the Mustangs would be in title contention after losing quarterback Tommy Stephens to a knee injury one week before the season started.
 Well, one player did.
Stephens told his team in Week 2 that this was still a championship caliber team. King City is now one win away from clinching its first league title in 32 years.
Of course, a loss could knock them out of the postseason picture.
 Pressure?
Not if you talk to the Mustangs, who have not beaten Carmel in 11 years, but have already snapped a five game losing streak to Pacific Grove and a three-game skid to Soledad.
King City has been creative in its offense, moving Clay Barbree all over the field, as evident by him having accounted for 11 touchdowns this year.
Barbree is still one of the areas biggest threats at tight end, having compiled 588 receiving yards on just 24 catches.
Luis Luna is coming off his best game at quarterback for King City, having fired three touchdown passes, while rushing for 88 yards.
This is a playoff game for Carmel, as its string of 10 consecutive postseason appearances is on the line. Essentially it can't lose another game -- and that still might not be enough.
The Padres have looked like the juggernaut of the past in their last two games, producing 90 points in a pair of lopsided wins.
Dakota Mornhinweg's return has rejuvenated the offense, as the sophomore has six touchdowns in two games for Carmel, and two interceptions on defense.
Juniors Rashaan Ward and Luke Melcher have combined for 70 catches for nearly 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns for Carmel.
Anchored by a pair of Zach's in Rossi and DeZee, the Padres defense has allowed just 19 points in their last two games.
