Friday's game
Seaside (1-0) vs. Monterey (0-1) at MPC, 7:30 p.m.
Ideally you want your rivalry game to be the final game of the regular season. And for 49 of the previous 54 meetings, that has been the case between these two teams.
Yet, the last time the Toreadores and Seaside met in a non-traditional Week 3 meeting in 2015 at MPC, it ended up being the game of the year.
The Spartans rallied from a 14-point deficit to force overtime and stun Monterey 22-21 with a two-point conversation.
A Seaside win this year would even the series at 27 wins apiece. The Spartans have won two of the last three meetings when the game has been held at MPC.
DeMarcus Hawkins piled up 170 yards and three rushing touchdowns in his first start at tailback for the Spartans, and caught a touchdown pass from Ivan Ochoa, who threw for 193 yards.
Daniel Sayre, who intercepted seven passes last year, returning five for pick six's, opened the season with an interception against Soledad. Hawkins and Braulio Avila were beasts on defense.
Sophomore Azjani McGill was a bright spot for the Toreadores with a touchdown in the first quarter last week. Protecting quarterback Evans Charles is a must.
Monterey is trying to snap a 14 game losing streak away from its regular home on campus. Its last road win came in 2014 against Seaside.
