A sideline filled with energy and enthusiasm also sported a few jerseys without pads.
You didn't need a roster to recognize a couple of the numbers.
"We don't talk about injuries,'' Salinas coach Steve Zenk said.
Yet, a pair of them are significant to the Cowboys aerial attack, including quarterback Brett Reade's favorite target last fall in Jeff Weimer.
A sprained ACL has kept Weimer -- team leading 45 catches last year -- off the field. Take away two more options and the passing game is going to suffer.
Now it likely wouldn't have made much of a difference in Friday's 27-0 loss to Central Coast Section power Milpitas, who has outscored three teams 141-6 this fall.
But if Salinas is going to make a run in the Gabilan Division, it can't be one dimensional. Right now the chemistry among quarterback and receivers isn't quite there.
Salinas' offense did not penetrate the red zone against a filthy and fast Milpitas defense. During its two-game skid, it's been outscored 37-0 in the first half.
It's difficult to make second half comebacks keeping the ball on the ground. That being said, the two teams Salinas has fallen to are a combined 6-0 on the field this year.
Of course, awaiting the Cowboys is another undefeated team in Seaside, where Salinas will play its first game on grass instead of synthetic turf at Seaside.
