Saturday's game
Gilroy (1-0) at Carmel (1-0), 2 p.m.
The game could have more implications than you think.
Put playoff points aside for a moment.
What if both teams go on and win their respective divisions this season? Will the winner of this non-league game be ticketed to the Gabilan Division in 2018?
Don't laugh. One league champion will move up.
For now the Padres mission is containing Gilroy's running duo of Joseph Barnes and Dylan Holler, who combined for nearly 2,300 yards and 31 touchdowns last season.
Opening the season with a 34-14 win over Overfelt, the Mustangs reached the CCS Division IV semifinals last year, falling to eventual section champion Soledad.
The reigning Mission Trail Athletic League champion Padres were impressive in the second half in a 40-26 win over Willow Glen, outscoring them 20-0 during one stretch.
Sophomore quarterback Kai Lee tossed three touchdown passes, with Dylan Houpt being his favorite target with two scoring strikes.
Tailback Luke Melcher chalked up 134 yards on the ground. In four career starts for Carmel, he has gone over 100 yards rushing in each game.
