Friday's game
Coalinga (1-0) at Gonzales (1-0), 7:30 p.m.
With temperatures expected to reach a high of 105 degrees Friday, the hope is the prevailing Salinas Valley winds will kick up to cool things down by kickoff.
The Horned Toads opened the season with a defensive minded 14-6 win over Wasco while Gonzales gave up 62 points after scoring first in a loss to Fremont of Oakland.
Matt Pimental was efficient for Coalinga last week, completing 12-of-15 passes for 122 yards while the running back tandem of Mike Cerda and Eric Saldana combined for 162 yards.
Saldana also made his presence felt on defense, recovering a fumble and returning it for a touchdown in what proved to be the difference in the game for Coalinga.
The Spartans are still searching for an identity. As well as things began -- producing the games first touchdown -- the inability to effectively run the ball shut down the offense.
Gonzales rushed for just 13 yards and managed just 36 plays in the game. A pair of turnovers last week also created a short field for the opponent and a long night for the defense.
