CSUMB softball

New season. Same destination for the Otters.
The nations No. 5 ranked Division II team is the top seed in the Regional I bracket, as CSUMB will host No. 8 Western Washington today at 2:30 p.m.
The California Collegiate Athletic Association champions are 43-11 this season, five games off their school record run of 48 wins in 2014.
Dixie State and Sonoma State are also in the four-team, double elimination bracket.
The Otters showcase one of the nations top hurlers in CCAA Freshman of the Year Hayley Fein, who has 29 wins and a 1.85 earned run average this spring.
Conference Most Valuable Player Julia Garcia put together a monster type season, leading the Otters in hitting (.475), homers (15) and runs batted in (59) in 54 games.
Senior Madison Casto got hot in the second half, raising her average to .387 while hitting six bombs and driving in 40 runs, while Luci Stanley has six homers and 41 RBI.
Eight full time starters hit over .300 this year for the Otters, including former Salinas High and MPC product Sam Luna, who is hitting .308 with a team high 13 steals and 30 RBI.
Western Washington (33-17) won the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Freshman Anna Kanser was 3-0 in the conference tournament with an 0.00 earned run average.
At the plate, Makinlee Sellevold set a single-season school record for Western Washington, driving in 51 runs while Emily Benson has a team high 12 homers and a .387 average.
The Otters are 18-4 at home this year, with one of those losses coming from Sonoma State. Last year CSUMB beat Western Washington 3-2 in a tournament in Turlock.
