Steven Zenk was the logical choice to take over as the Cowboys new football coach. He has head coaching experience. He's on campus and is respected by the kids.
Zenk has run the offensive line at Salinas for the last three years. Not surprisingly, Salinas has had its three highest offensive productions.
What Zenk does as well as any coach is provide motivation. He can light a fire under players with a clam, but composed tone. He demands discipline. He won't be outworked.
Zenk isn't afraid of expectations, which are high at Salinas. Look for the Cowboys program to take another step forward.

Steve Zenk is one of the most illogical choices that Salinas High could have made. The only reason he got the job is because he would have gone to the school board citing Ed Code that they did not hire him because he was already on campus and wanted the job. Ask him yourself as he stated as much prior to being a finalist for coaching interviews. I think that this program just took several steps backwards , a coach that claimed to have a 100% graduation rate at North Salinas but in the same sentence could only keep on average about 10 players all four years due to their grades, I don't know about you but that doesn't add up to me. In terms of his"calm but composed tone" I've seen a lot of HS football and that is far from what I've observed from this coach when in the Head Coach role. What you will end up seeing is a coaching carousel of OCs that bring in a new offense every year or two which will be the only advantage he will have because year to year his one players, let alone other teams, will not have any clue to what they are going to run. I am not a supporter of any one program but am a supporter of good football and if this school wanted to get over the hump and be a serious state contender year in and year out like they should be with the amount of players and resources available to them... they should have truly taken this hiring seriously and looked elsewhere.
