Now comes perhaps head coach Greg Daniels biggest hurdle.
How will his Toreadores respond after seeing their school record breaking start of 17 straight wins end?
There's no time for mourning.
Monterey opens the second half of the Gabilan Division season Friday, hosting Salinas.
Deflated?
Sure. A sold old Monterey gym was buzzing before the tipoff. There was a lot of buildup before facing Palma by the student body.
Perhaps too much for a regular season game.
Monterey is still in good shape if it doesn't dwell on this loss. It's a program that has a legitimate shot at being extended an invitation to the Central Coast Section Open Division playoffs.
Take it.
The Open Division will be wide open this year. Who knows, perhaps a third meeting with Palma will be in the cards.
Even more important is an invitation to the CCS Open Division playoffs would ensure a spot in the State Northern California Division III playoffs for Toreadores.
Opening the season 17-0 wasn't an accident.
