And the Vikings were not a title contender last year, finishing six games off the pace.
That's not the case this year as North Salinas sits just a game behind visiting Alisal at 4-1 going into Wednesday's tipoff to close the first half of the Pacific Division season.
Nothing has come easy for the Vikings, who have a double overtime win, and a one-point win to go along with a four-point loss.
It's been a committee approach for North Salinas with Rico Vega, Darren Tennant, Noah Backus and CJ Sibal all providing clutch baskets.
Alisal has rattled off 17 straight league wins, having posted double-digit decisions in all five league games this winter, including a 21 point win over previously unbeaten Pajaro Valley last Friday.
The Trojans are utilizing their size inside with 6-foot-5 Rene Hurtado and 6-4 Adriano Betancourt, while sophomore sharpshooter Josue Gil-Silva has buried 38 3-point goals.
All three are averaging over 14 points a game for Alisal. All three have been on the court together for the last three games for the first time in three weeks.
