Trinity basketball

Trinity Warriors (10-10, 9-1)
The bar was raised last year when Trinity captured the programs first league title, and won a playoff game.
The postseason win might have been bigger for the Warriors, as it proved that they could beat a team outside league play after going 0-9 in non-league play.
First year coach Ty Sims isn't bashful about expectations. A former assistant coach at Hanford West and Caruthers -- both of which won section titles during his tenure -- has him aiming high.
"We have a bunch of goals to accomplish,'' Sims said. "And one is to make a state run. These kids want to be challenged.''
Which is why Sims put together a demanding, but comparable non-league schedule that will include teams Trinity could see down the line if it reaches the Division V playoffs.
"I made our non-league schedule with the purpose of getting better,'' Sims said. "We might take our lumps. The kids have embraced the schedule. We don't want to stand pat.''
Not with three starters returning, including reigning Coastal Athletic League Most Valuable Player Jamez Booker.
The senior guard, who compiled over 2,000 all-purpose yards for the Warriors football team this past fall, lit up opponents last year on the hardwood, averaging just under 20 points a game.
"He's a very talented kid,'' Sims said.
So is returning all-league forward Shane Doughty, who was among the team leaders last season in points and rebounds, along with guard Deven Smith.
Yet, the player that has caught Sims' eye early in the season has been 6-foot-3 guard Vincenzo Malo, who transferred in last month from Hawaii.
"From what I've seen, he's more of a slasher,'' Sims said. "He can knock down the open shot. He gets above the rim. He's going to help us.''
Sims will keep 10 players -- four of which are 6-foot-3 or taller, using an eight or nine man rotation. Trinity will also have a junior varsity program.
"My style is very different coming from the Central Coast,'' Sims said. "We're going to be a fast pace team. We're going to be very aggressive and have a lot of energy.''
