North County Condors (17-9, 6-6)
The assumption was the reigning 2014 Pacific Division champions would go through growing pains in the Gabilan Division last season.
To a degree it was true as North County was 13-3 outside the Gabilan, a .500 team in league. What it really was in league play was inconsistent.
In 12 league games, just three were decided by 10 points or less. There was no in between for North County. Either it dominated or got humbled.
"Every year our expectations are to work hard, play hard and compete,'' third year coach Jared Ames said. "If we do that, North County basketball will be success.''
Yet, for the first time in four years, the Condors program won't have the school's all-time leader in points igniting the offense as Jordan Graves has graduated.
Filing the void will be a cast of players, including 6-foot-6 three-year starter Jeremy Heitzman, who has been a double-double machine the last two years.
Heitzman gave North County another dimension in the paint last year, averaging over 13 points and 13 rebounds a game.
He will likely get more touches this winter as the Condors offense will be centered around him and returning sharpshooter Abraham Calderon, who led the team in 3-point goals last season.
Calderon provided instant offense with his ability to step out on the perimeter and drain jump shots. He also served as a distributor, leading the team in assists.
North County also returns one of the top defenders in the county in Steven Flores, who was named to the Gabilan Division All-Defensive team last year.
Flores, who quarterbacked the Condors football team, is tenacious on defense along with Calderon, who compiled 35 steals last year.
The experience nine returning players got from a season in the Gabilan is invaluable. And in a league that appears balanced, North County will be in the mix.
