Three-time Central Coast Section Division IV cross country champion Roman Munoz finished 21st for King City Saturday at the CIF State Division IV championships in Fresno.
Munoz, who was a part of King City’s second place state Division IV team as a sophomore in 2014, covered the 3.01 Woodward Park loop in 16:07.
Mission Trail Athletic League and Central Coast Section Division IV team champion Greenfield placed 13th as a team, with Rigo Garcia and Julian Arias being the top two finishers. Following the pair for the Bruins were Luis Meza, Jaime Martinez, Luis Perez, Mauricio Arias and Rosendo Ramirez.
Led by Jake Alt’s 27th place finish, Pacific Grove finished 22nd as a team in the Division IV finals. Alt covered the course in 16:12, with teammate Everett Millette clocking 17:03.
Palma sophomore Sam Lavorato finished 32nd in the Division IV finals in 16:19, a few strides ahead of sophomore teammate Thomas Padilla, who was making his second straight state meet appearance.
"I told the boys everything happening is a learning experience for next year,’’ Palma coach Francisco Cornejo said. "Both are still very young. It was a very positive experience.’’
The Pacific Division champion Chieftains will be moving into the Gabilan Division next season with the core intact.
"I thought Tommy ran smarter this year,’’ Cornejo said. "The main thing for Sam was getting him on this course. Last year I got one to state. This year two. Next year the goal is to bring the team.’’
York, which has made sending a team to the State Division V finals a Thanksgiving tradition, finished 16th as a team. Kaden Agha was clocked in 16:48, followed by teammates Washakie Tibbetts, Adam Shapiro, Jaryd Mercer, Xander Laney and Alden Sanford.
"As a long time coach, I feel very fortunate to have had so many talented teams and runners,’’ York coach Steve Peters said. "All the York runners have embraced the sport and its rigors. It has been a true honor to work with each every season.’’
San Jose State bound Evelin Meza of Greenfield finished 31st in the State Division IV girls cross country finals, clocking 19:07.
Meza, who defended her MTAL title earlier this year for the Bruins, missed most of the season with a lower leg injury.
Notre Dame freshman Angela Leavitt finished 38th in the Division V cross country finals, four places in front of teammate Shantal Martinez.
"Angela is a tricky person to guess where she’s at,’’ Cronejo said. "There are days in practice where she’s nervous. Then in the race, she’s relaxed. She didn’t look like a freshman today.’’
As a team, the Spirits finished 10th, the highest finish in school history.
"All these girls have never been at state or at a competitive level like this,’’ Cornejo said. "Angie and Shantel ran well. This is going to help our program for the future.’’
Pacific Grove’s Anna Stefanou covered the Fresno course in 20:33, finishing 103rd in the Division IV cross country finals. Kayla Clayton ran 19:40 for Salinas at the Division I finals.
