Soledad-Westmont football

Central Coast Section Division IV finals
Saturday's game
Soledad (9-3) vs. Westmont (11-1) at Independence High, San Jose, 7 p.m.
We keep suggesting the Aztecs are in uncharted waters. Perhaps that is a good thing because this team appears oblivious to the pressures of chasing a section title.
Having established a new single-season school record for wins, Soledad is one step from bringing home the schools first Central Coast Section title in any sport.
Owners of five consecutive wins, the Aztecs are facing a Westmont program that has rattled off 10 straight wins, with its only loss coming in Week 2 to Leigh.
The Warriors, who came into the tournament with a 2-8 career playoff mark, have outscored their two postseason opponents 82-41.
Soledad's defense will face its biggest challenge of the season in attempting to contain running back Nolan Berry, who has rushed for 1,738 yards and 24 touchdowns.
Quarterback Johnnie Phillips has thrown for just under 1,000 yards and 13 touchdowns, with just two picks in 128 attempts.
The Aztecs defense did a solid job in stopping a potent Gilroy ground attack last week in a 27-26 win. But they gave up big plays through the air.
Daniel Contawe has compiled 15 sacks while Andrew Hernandez is one of three players with over 100 tackles for Soledad with 154, while Agustine Meza has 128.
That Aztecs defense has also scored five touchdowns this year with Aaron Rodriguez having picked off five passes, returning one for a pick six.
Soledad has kept its defense fresh by running the ball behind Emmanuel Ortega, who has rushed for over 1,600 yards -- 808 yards in his last four games.
Quarterback Robbie Santa Ana was efficient last week, completing 8-of-11 for 102 yards, while rushing for 48 yards and a touchdown.
This will be Soledad's first road game in six weeks. Its last road game was a 32-7 loss to Carmel. It's just 2-2 on the road this year.
