Emilio Martinez greeted us three years ago with a burst, rushing for 158 yards while scoring three touchdowns as a sophomore.
Turns out it was just a tease to what the 5-foot-9 Chieftains tailback would achieve over the next 28 games.
Martinez wanted to make up for lost time after losing half of last season to a hamstring injury.
Mission accomplished.
The senior has every Palma rushing record after piling up a single-game high 308 yards in just three quarters Friday against Saratoga.
This was a playoff game and Martinez blew up the Saratoga defense on just 25 carries. That's 10 plus yards each time he touched the ball.
But it gets better.
A fifth of his carries resulted in touchdowns as Martinez rushed for six -- four in the first half.
Martinez, who has an offer on the table from the University of San Diego, has rushed for over 100 yards 20 times -- over 200 yards seven times.
With 30 rushing touchdowns this fall, Martinez has 66 for his career and 4,258 rushing yards.
If they're not county records, he's closing in on them. And Martinez isn't done. The Chieftains are in the CCS Open Division III semifinals.
Yet, what Martinez wanted more than anything this year was a chance to play for a section title and take Palma to a place it's never been.
The Chieftains are one win away from achieving one of those goals.
