Los Medanos-MPC football

Living Breath Foundation Bowl
Saturday's game
Los Medanos (8-2) vs. Monterey Peninsula (9-1) at Rabobank, 1 p.m.
The Lobos were four points shy from being undefeated this season, sharing the conference title with West Hills.

Los Medanos (8-2) earned a bowl bid after closing the season two weeks ago with a non-conference win over Hartnell. It also has a win over West Hills back in Week 3.
"They’re unique to be honest with you,’’ MPC coach Mike Rasmussen said. "We’ve faced them a number of times over the years. They’ve stuck with their system. They know what they’re doing. It’s a blue collar type group.’’
MPC quarterback Kody Steele has thrown for over 2,300 yards and 26 touchdowns in eight full games.
Three different receivers have 40 or more receptions, including Michael Williams, who has 11 touchdown catches. Daryan Sanders caught a team high 51 passes.
MPC will be missing Michael Armstead, who tore his knee in Week 9, coming within 72 yards of a 1,000 yard receiving season.

The strength of the Lobos this season has been a resurgent defense, anchored by linebacker Andrew Jakubowsky, who led the team in tackles for the second straight year with 78.
Jakubowsky, a Seaside High grad, is coming off a three interception effort two weeks ago in the Lobos title clinching win over Reedley.
Alvarez alum Anthony McKay has produced 8 1/2 sacks in nine games, giving him 19 in two seasons for MPC. Salinas grad Eljiah Kirkland has 60 tackles, three picks and two forced fumbles.
The Lobos will look to ground Los Medanos quarterback Gabe Taylor, who has thrown for nearly 2,000 yards and 20 touchdowns.
"He’s a very good player,’’ said Rasmussen in speaking about Taylor. "They run him on the read option. He’s also a drop back passer. Plus he’s a big kid at 6-feet-4.’’
Two weeks ago Taylor threw for 198 yards and two touchdowns against Hartnell, and rushed for 51 yards and a touchdown. He is the teams fourth leading rusher.
Los Medanos has forced 23 turnovers this year and is plus two in turnover ratio. MPC has created 17 turnovers and is also plus two in turnover ratio.
Both teams are 4-1 on the road. Both teams had overtime games with Redwoods, with MPC winning and Los Medanos falling by a field goal.
