Santa Catalina volleyball playoff outlook

While it might not seem practical, it's possible that the 22-0 Cougars could get bumped into the Central Coast Section's newly created Open Division volleyball playoffs this fall.
According to CCS assistant commissioner Steve Filios, any team that qualifies for the playoffs can be selected.
Teams will be chosen and seeded for the Open Division in a closed meeting Saturday at 1 p.m. by a committee composed of one representative from each of the CCS's basic leagues.
Criteria will include CCS seeding points, league finish, MaxPreps.com rankings, strength of league, head-to-head competition and common opponents.
Santa Catalina, who reached the CCS Division V finals last year, and would be the favorite this fall, has won 61 of 67 possible sets.
Among its wins was a five-set decision at Salinas. But it didn't play any other opponent that would be classified as an 'A' League.
While the reigning two-Mission Trail Athletic League champion Cougars likely have enough points to qualify for the Open, they're not even ranked in the top 100 in the state by MaxPreps.
My guess is the Cougars will remain in Division V for an extended postseason run. And they will see Notre Dame in the CCS finals.
