Salinas City Meet

Angela Leavitt's goal was to break 20 minutes. How about the Notre Dame freshmen distance ace dripping under 19 minutes over three miles.
Leavitt shadowed defending champion Kayla Clayton of Salinas for all but the final stretch, using a wicked sprint over the final 100 meters to win the Salinas City Meet cross country championship.
"I didn't think I could run with her,'' said Leavitt, who ran 18:53.
On the boys side, Palma sophomore Sam Lavorato defended his title, breaking away from a pack of four at the midpoint, clocking a season best 15:34.90.
Alisal won its third boys City Meet team title in nine years with a narrow three-point decision over Salinas, with Palma finishing five points back.
Salinas won the girls City Meet team title with a 10-point win over Notre Dame.
"The team title means more to me than the individual title,'' Clayton said.
