It's easy to get nervous and intimidated when you see the times and marks of a state track meet.
If Mikayla Revera learned anything from last year's appearance, it's to focus on what she can attain.
The Santa Catalina junior will go into Friday's State Track and Field championships on the cusp of extending her season another day in the 400.
Revera, who ran a career best 54.86 at last week's Central Coast Section finals, is ranked 10th. The top nine advance to Saturday's finals.
"You can't focus on what others are doing,'' said Revera, who reached the state meet last year in the 200 and 400.
Revera is again entered in the 200, where her mark of 24.64 has her seeded 18th.
One the heels of his school record setting time of 1:54.25 in the 800, Raul Barraza will go into the state prelims ranked 13th for North Salinas.
Barraza came from last with 500 meters left at last week's CCS finals to finish second, rewriting his own school record.
"It's not about making it here,'' Barraza said. "It's about competing.''
Teammate Fabian Hunkin will take part in the discus after uncorking it a season best 154-7. The mark has the junior ranked 24th.
CCS 1,600 runner-up Roman Munoz of King City will go into Friday's prelims ranked 25th at 4:17.34. The junior was a state meet qualifier last fall in cross country as well.
Salinas discus thrower D'Vina Brown used a personal best of 133-1 to advance to the state meet, where she is ranked 21st.
CCS 400 meter champion Zack Miller of Pacific Grove withdrew from the state meet because of a prior commitment.
