Rise in interest in boys volleyball

Four new boys volleyball teams were added this year, increasing the total of teams to 16, forcing the Monterey Bay League to create two divisions.
Of course, growing pains were expected.
In fact, only five of the 16 teams that have volleyball programs have winning overall records.
Monterey County is at least a decade behind in terms of development with some of the programs in the Central Coast Section.
Yet, the continued interest in the sport could see two more schools add volleyball next spring.
One team that has risen from the aches this spring has been Carmel, who broke its single season school record for wins this year with 14 and counting.
Up until this point, the Padres had never posted a winning overall record in six years. With five games left in the regular season, they are undefeated at 9-0.
We've seen Palma, Monterey, Seaside and Watsonville all produce a quality product on the court in the past. Pajaro Valley is one of those programs with a winning record this year.
What began as a recreational sport for some schools is becoming more popular.
Yet, with six other spring sports going on for most schools in the county, is there enough athletes to  turn volleyball into the sport of choice?
