Central Coast Section Division IV finals
Saturday's game
No. 4 Carmel (23-4) at No. 2 Pacific Grove (22-4) at Kaiser Arena, Santa Cruz, 8 p.m.
So what happens when the adrenaline wears off a few minutes into the game?
If you're looking for a key to this title bout, start with emotion between these two rivals.
Because there are no secrets.
The Padres and three-time Mission Trail Athletic League champion Pacific Grove split their head-to-head meetings this year, with each winning on their home court.
There's clearly no advantage playing at Kaiser Arena, as both Carmel and the Breakers are 2-0 this year.
Carmel has rattled off 10 straight wins while the Breakers have not tasted defeat since falling by two to the Padres back on Feb. 5.
Defense has been the backbone to both teams' ride through the postseason as Carmel held Division IV top seed Sacred Heart Prep under 50 points in a 58-47 win.
The Breakers, meanwhile outscored Gabilan Division runner-up Monte Vista 19-5 in the final eight minutes to reach their first finals in 11 years.
While four-year starter John Stivers is having another MVP type season for Carmel, averaging 23 points and 12 rebounds, so is Pacific Grove's Brad Sendell, who is dropping in 18 points a game.
You don't stop the pair. You hope to contain them.
Look for the Breakers Chip Wagner and Zack Miller to take turns battling Stivers in the paint while San Snowden or Marco Giangoiorgi could draw the assignment on Sendell.
Both teams have had four days to think about this game. That's a lot of anxiety building up.
