Repeating as Central Coast Section champions is rare.
Three-peating is almost unheard off -- particularly in basketball.
Yet, I do not believe it's been a secret that this has been North Salinas' objective since -- well perhaps minutes after defending last year's CCS Division I title.
Talk about lofty expectations.
Remember, five players that had spent all four years on the varsity -- four of which were starters the last two years -- graduated.
If this years team needed an identity, North Salinas found it last Thursday when it rolled past Monte Vista -- a team that ended its 35-game Gabilan Division winning streak in January.
Now the Vikings are two wins away from clinching at least a share of their fourth consecutive league title, and a likely high seed in Sunday's CCS seeding meeting.
A fourth straight 20 plus win season is an achievement. But North Salinas needed a signature win, if for no other reason than to reestablish that sense of dominance.
As good as four-year starter Jordyn Enos has been this winter for the Vikings, senior Alissa Foster has evolved into one of the premier players in the county.
Danae Snell has built a resume in the last month of the season. Still, North Salinas is doing what it has done during the Darren Jackson era and that's suffocate teams on defense.
It has held seven straight teams under 40 points. It held Monte Vista to its second lowest output of the season in 39 points.
It's a recipe for a run at a third straight CCS title.
