For the second straight year, the Toreadores boys and girls track and field programs are in limbo.
A week into the season and there has been no official practice held -- in part because there is no head coach, or any coaches.
One returning runner for Monterey told me 'As of right now, we don't have a team, only individuals that are determined to make this a great season. We need a coach.'
Last year administration talked about shutting down the program if a coach couldn't be found. One coach was hired two weeks into the season.
Despite the late start last year, the Toreadores put together a solid season in the Pacific Division in both the boys and girls brackets.
Yet, not starting on time does put the athletes behind. In addition, a lack of attention to the sport is sending the programs numbers down.
This is a prominent program that has a boys Central Coast Section team title to its past, a two-time state individual champion in girls -- not to mention numerous state meet qualifiers over the last 80 years.
Dropping the program shouldn't even be an option.
