York (3-7, 3-8)
It's difficult to build a program without a preseason.
Oh, the Falcons looked for non-league games -- were even willing to take their lumps.
No takers.
So York will go into its Coastal Athletic League opener without a lot of game experience, since last year's starting five graduated, and only one senior is on the squad in Phillip DeLormier.
The mine set at York isn't quite like other programs. Most players don't pick up a basketball until the season starts.
Head coach Josh Leigh gets it.
It's been that way since his arrival five years ago. Yet, it does not mean he isn't trying to change the culture at York.
Still hindered by a committee decision in 2013 to move the Falcons into the MTAL, where they were outscored 862-234, selling the sport on campus hasn't been easy.
There is no junior varsity program and just 11 players on the varsity roster.
Four of them, however, do have experience, starting of Joseph Rhee, who will be asked to pick up the scoring load at the forward position.
It won't hurt having point guard Paolo Garcia to distribute the ball around the floor. The junior has good ball handling skills and can penetrate to the basketball.
The Falcons first four aren't bad as Frankie Kalinsky provides some height in the paint. DeLormier will give them another scoring option as a forward.
Realistically, the goals at York are simple. It's to improve and take steps forward, with one eye on the future.
