Maybe it was the 0-2-1 non-league start that fooled us.
Or the fact that the Padres haven't made the playoffs in three years.
Flying under the radar, though, is no longer an option.
Carmel will have a target on its back in the second half of the Mission Trail Athletic League season after a 6-0-0 start to league play.
The six league wins equals last year's entire total. Among the wins was a 2-1 decision over reigning four-time MTAL champion Soledad.
While the Padres aren't scoring goals in bunches, they are playing defense, having shutout three of their last four opponents.
Since the 0-2-1 start, Carmel has allowed just six goals in its last eight games. It hasn't allowed a goal in the first half in MTAL play.
Offensively Dilyn Langdon, Daniel Zito, Mac Cotelli and Benji Dinsky have taken turns providing clutch goals for the Padres.
