Marina (4-19, 3-11)
No place to call home for games and practices. Blacktop practices outside aren't out of the question.
This is nothing new at Marina.
Embracing it is a tough sell for head coach Ron Powell.
Yet, there are signs that players Powell has watched grow through the Marina Police Athletic League are staying home.
Four freshmen that he has worked with as an administrator at the Marina PAL since kindergarten are at Marina.
Powell calls it loyalty, and a desire to make a difference at Marina
The Mariners have never had a home court advantage. That's not going to change in the near future.
The rims, however, are 10 feet high no matter where you go.
It's not about excuses at Marina. It's about taking care of the ball better this year.
Last year the Mariners averaged 21 turnovers a game in dropping 19 games. An emphasis on taking care of the ball was preached throughout the preseason.
Powell is keeping his four freshman down because he has 13 seniors on this year's roster, including guard Justin Ginette, who was the teams second leading scorer last year.
Ginette and Jaime Santos are both returning starters for Marina, providing leadership and a desire to change the course of direction this year.
It won't hurt having Will Leander running the point. Powell has an athletic big man in 6-foot-4 Jake Holback, who is also an outstanding pitcher at Marina.
There's enough talent and depth for Marina to be competitive this year. Cutting down on turnovers will keep them in games this year.
