King City (11-14, 7-7)
Five returning seniors have been playing together since the eighth grade.
Will it be enough to capitulate the Mustangs into the upper echelon of the Mission Trail Athletic League this winter?
King City was close last year, as it was involved in five games decided by two points or less, going 2-3 in those battles. Two of those setbacks, though, came in league.
The Mustangs are going to apply pressure on teams this season because head coach Jesus Ramirez believes he's got the depth and quickness to push the tempo for 36 minutes.
Among the fab five include Jovany Garcia, an all-league guard that led the team in steals and assists last year while dropping in 13 points a game.
There is chemistry with this unit, which includes three-sport standout Jarod Davis, who could be a double-double machine in the paint with his 6-3, 225-pound frame.
Davis is at full strength this year after missing part of last year with a knee injury. He will be paired with Tate Kelley inside. Opponents will have to earn their points inside.
The Mustangs will run a three-guard system when pressing as Addie Ramirez and Jacob Flores both return.
One thing Ramirez believes he has this year is outside shooting. Defense, however, is what he feels holds the key to King City taking the next step.
There's not a lot of tradition here. The Mustangs haven't won a league title in 14 years and have just two titles in last 50 years.
Yet, King City has reached the postseason seven times since winning its last title. Snapping a seven game playoff losing streak would be a realistic goal.
