The black uniforms were broken out after warmups just for 'The Shoe' game.
Why mess with success?
Pacific Grove was undefeated this year wearing its traditional home uniforms.
Then again, uniforms have nothing to do with performance.
Right?
Truth be told, Carmel came out and simply outplayed the Breakers from the opening drive.
It established time consuming drives with a ground game that racked up over 300 yards -- 800 plus now in its last two games.
Engineering drives with a running game that chews up the clock was something the Padres weren't able to do the last two years in big games -- that and play defense.
Carmel was flying to the ball where John Stivers was a menace at linebacker with a punishing tackle on fourth down in the first half that took the air out of the Breakers sails.
The Padres played like a team determined to gather a share of the Mission Trail Athletic League, scoring on their first four drives to take a 24-0 lead.
Quarterback Daniel Higman has changed how this offense operates for Carmel, having racked up nearly 400 rushing yards in his last two games.
Carmel can still wing with hits multiple formations. But grinding on the ground with Higman and 230-pound Covossay Windham became the recipe for bringing 'The Shoe' back to Carmel.
