Carmel-Half Moon Bay football

Friday's game
Central Coast Section Division V semifinals
Carmel (8-3) at Half Moon Bay (9-2), 7 p.m.
Runner-ups in the Peninsula Ocean Division, the Cougars only setbacks this year came from league champion Hillsdale and Terra Nova.
Half Moon Bay has scored 40 or more points five times this year, including a 50-40 win over Kings Academy four weeks ago, and a 47-34 playoff opening win over San Lorenzo Valley.
Carmel has played the last three weeks like its season was on the line, averaging  43 points a game, producing 50 in beating Kings Academy last week.
Covossay Windham is coming off a seven touchdown effort, in which he rushed for 297 yards and six touchdowns, and tossed a touchdown pass.
The 225-pound junior, who missed the better part of three games with a knee injury, has rushed for  nearly 1,400 yards in seven games.
While the Padres still line up in multiple passing formations, they have rushed for over 1,200 yards in the last three games -- and nearly 2,800 yards on the season.
This is a rematch of last year's playoff opener, in which Carmel prevailed 42-14. Since starting the season 1-2, the Mission Trail Athletic League tri-champions are 8-1.
Engaging in shootouts in the playoffs is nothing new for Carmel, as the average point total in its last six playoff games has been 93 points between the two teams.
The difference this year is an effective ground game is enabling the Padres to hold a lead late in the game.
